Cyto Graph

The Cytograph displayed shows the 5 drafts that eventually led to the final release of Star Wars: A New Hope. Many characters between the different versions went by different names and had different roles. Some characters from the various drafts transfer over between version such as Luke, however his role would get passed around to Annikin (this being a prototype of Anakin in the Prequels). Many stock characters and side roles remain the same between positions, however some of the characters are dropped entirely between versions, remaining as one off character concepts before they become refined, with others coming about in the final draft.

Luke vs Vader

Through our research, we noticed that Luke and Vader were consistent characters through all 5 drafts. Luke is always the hero and Vader as the villain. They were not always who we came to know however. Luke for example was a general from his introduction in the rough draft. He is described to be “a large man, apparently in his early sixties.” Vader is more mysterious, he is only described as “a tall, grim-looking general.” It is important to point out that in the Cytograph above, you will not find Luke connected to all 5 scripts. This is because in the rough and first draft Luke is referred to as General in the character speeches.

Artwo Speeches

Since our character network only included characters from each draft that had lines of dialogue, we were initially a bit shocked to see R2D2 there. Other characters across the scripts that didn’t have any lines in English were typically relegated to just being mentioned in the stage directions. But it turns out that in the rough draft of episode IV, R2 has some lines of actual dialogue. In quite a few of these lines, Artwo’s signature spunk can be seen in a much more verbal way that what most are accustomed to. There were also a couple other less noteworthy characters that spoke in some of the earlier drafts, but not the final one. This includes the Jawas and the Tusken Raiders. Below are a few of Artwo’s lines from the rough draft.

Artwo on Cytograph
- "You're a mindless, useless philosopher... Come on! Let's go back to work; the system is all right."
- "Our work - we can't leave! It's desertion. It's not possible. It's not possible."
- "It's not possible. We're not built for this. You're nothing more than a dim- witted, emotion-brained intellectual. Why you were created is beyond my logic systems. Thanks to you, we're deserters, and will probably be destroyed on sight. And on top of that, you're going the wrong way! All this filth is getting...."
- "I've got a bad case of dust contamination. I can barely move."
- "Station 325 is the highest security area on board. It's a detention area."
